Prehistory

Humankind have been curious about their history since ancient times. It was not until the 19th century when archaeology emerged as a science.

Since then, scientists have established a periodization for the different stages of humankind development.

The technologies for processing various raw materials – like stone, clay, copper, bronze alloy, iron – are the basis of the chronological periodization.
NEW STONE AGE
It is associated with the so-called Neolithic Revolution and the transition from hunting and gathering to sedentarism, agriculture and animal husbandry, and the appearance of the first ceramic vessels.
CHALCOLITHIC PERIOD
It is characterized by the mastering of the extraction and smelting of copper ore and gold.
BRONZE AGE
The processing of copper and adding other metals to create bronze alloy caused several technological revolutions which were fundamental for the Bronze Age.
IRON AGE
At the beginning of the first millennium BC the well-established trade routes and crossroads collapsed, and there was shortage of the additives needed for the bronze alloy. In a search for new prospects, the population of the Balkan Peninsula discovered and mastered the iron ore processing and later the fast potter’s wheel for making finer ceramic vessels. It is suggested that the first proto states emerged during the Late Iron Age.

End of prehistory

The end of prehistory was marked by the appearance of the first writing systems which differed chronologically in the individual regions and cultures.
