Icons

A small collection of church icons from the late 19th – the beginning of the 20th century is also exhibited in the hall. They were removed from churches in the villages of Gledachevo and Staroselets before they were forcibly displaced and destroyed by the rotary excavators of the Mines. Staroselets was demolished in 1975, while Gledachevo was gradually destroyed between 2001-2009.

The icons illustrate the liturgic practices and artistic style, typical for the period, immediately before the liberation of Bulgaria. Some of the artists had signed the icons – we found the name of Nidin Toshov on one of them; in other cases some inscriptions mention the donor of the church – like Jovan Tanev, Grozi Ivanov.

One of the icons – the one of St. Mina – was restored by a student from the Notational Academy of Arts in Sofia.

Although the churches and the villages are already gone, the memory of them is still cherished as a significant part of the regional cultural heritage.
