Settlement and necropolis nearby Znamenosets

The medieval settlement is situated in Gerena locality, in the fertile lands between the rivers of Kumurdzha and Sazliyka.

Numerous residential and farm buildings were archaeologically excavated which allows us to partially restore the village layout. The houses were half-dug, with a massive roof supporting structure, comprising of poles. The roof of some of the houses was laid with tiles, which was uncommon for the medieval settlements of that type.

The necropolis was registered in the vicinity of the settlement and a total number of 550 graves have been studied to this day.

Many of the graves overlapped and destroyed others which indicate it was in use for a long period of time.

The human individuals were buried according to the Christian traditions in burial pits oriented along the W-E axis.

Archaeologists found in the graves lots of adornments and personal belongings: glass and bronze bracelets, earrings, head adornment, steatite and bronze crosses, glass-bead-necklaces, rings, knives, etc.

Probably, adjacent to the necropolis there was a graveyard church for mural fragments were found in the layers. The localization and the study of the church lie ahead and is next aim of the archaeological research.

The discovered ceramic materials – kitchenware and imported tableware – as well as the goods from the necropolis date the settlement in the 12th – 13th c.

It was part of a considerable agglomeration of 5 chronologically synchronous settlements, situated between Sazliyka river and its creeks Kumurdzha and Blatnica.
