Settlement with necropolis near Troyanovo

The settlement is located on the territory of “Troyanovo-sever” Mine.

It has been archaeologically excavated piecemeal during the last 20 years between 2002-2025. It had impressive for the period it existed size – it extended over an area of 30-40 acres, which indicates it was an agglomeration type settlement.

During the archaeological investigation half-dug rectangular houses with open fireplaces and farm premises were discovered. The roof supporting construction consisted of poles, while the roof itself was covered with marsh vegetation such as reeds.

Numerous garbage pits were also studied which were very typical for the medieval settlements.

The settlement necropolis has been localized and studied in recent years. The individuals were buried in accordance with the Christian traditions – in rectangular burial pits, oriented along the W-E axis, with head to the west and arms crossed on the pelvis. Usually, the humans were laid with personal belongings – earrings, glass-bead necklaces, glass and bronze bracelets, etc.

The found materials like kitchenware, imported sgraffito and painted ceramics date the settlement in the 12th c.

It is suggested that it was destroyed at the end of the 12th century by the Third Crusade’s knights.
