As a result of the intensive archaeological excavations of sites on the territory of the mines hundreds of artefacts are being added annually to the museum depository. Before their entry in our inventory books, most of them undergo conservation and restoration in the specially equipped studio of the museum.

Ceramic vessels restored with plaster

What is being restored?

Ceramic vessels are the most frequently restored finds in the studio, because usually archaeologists discover them fragmented on the field. If it is possible, their missing sections are completed with plaster, in order the entire form to be restored.

All metal items also undergo restoration and conservation – bronze, copper alloy or silver adornments, iron tools, etc., which are mechanically processed to remove the patina and the corrosion and after that they are stabilized to prevent degradation because of the changing of the environment in which they have been hundreds of years. The coins are either mechanically or by ultrasound cleaned or in specific chemical solutions.

Who are the restorers?

The museum hosts a restoration practice for the students from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia annually. They have the chance to experience the real work of our restorers, to try it themselves and to make their contribution to the museum’s depository. Usually, they use archaeological materials for their theses.

Thanks to our restoration studio, the visitors to our museum could see the artefacts, exhibited in the halls in their entire form and in the best possible condition.
